Title translates into English as, “Journal of the Science of Judaism, Vol. 1” This volume of “Zeitschrift…” (“Journal of the Science of Judaism”) was the very first volume of the periodical that began the first serious scientific inquiry of Judaism and Jewish texts associated with the larger Wissenschaft des Judentums Movement. “Leopold Zunz (1794 – 1886) was the founder of Academic Judaic Studies (Wissenschaft des Judentums) , the critical investigation of Jewish literature, hymnology and ritual. Zunz's historical investigations and contemporary writings had an important influence on contemporary Judaism. ” (Wikipedia, 2016) Published 10 years before Zunz’s “Gottesdienstliche Vorträge der Juden, ” which has been called the most important Jewish book of the 19th century. This first volume, which was instrumental in starting the movement, includes “Immanuel Wolf’s influential essay ‘Über den Begriff einer Wissenschaft des Judentums. ’” (Wikipedia, 2016) . Also includes several articles from notable Wissenschaft leaders: Zunz, Eduard Gans, and David Friedlander. The index, printed a year later in 1823 and not always present, has been added in front.
